They released a game that changed the gaming world as we know it.įor the entire FPS Genre, Wolfenstein was the one that well and truly started it all. In 1992, Id Software, Apogee, and 3DRealms joined forces for one, brief, glorious moment. What you can consider them, however, are the framework-layers for the games that followed them, since both were made by ID software.
Catacomb had a bigger following, however, and later, Softdisk, which held the rights to Catacomb 3D, created a sequel, Catacomb's Abyss.Īll and all, whilst these two were certainly the first FPS games, they couldn't really be considered the father of FPSes like the games that came after it. Overall, Hovertank is the better of the two games. Both games are excellent, and highly underrated, as well as playable, if a bit repetitve and silly. You could get weapon upgrades in Hovertank, which made your tank do more damage and do better against the various aliens and machines you encountered. Hovertank was similar, but you were trying to rescue civilians whilst killing aliens. Life was represented by a head on the right, and as you took damage, it got more and more skull-like. You picked up Heal Potions, and Scrolls for spells (Bolt, which rapid-fired charged shots, and Nuke, which sent charged shots in all directions). All enemies were 2D and facing you at all times, and in Catacomb 3D, you only had one attack (little magic missiles that could charge and fire a fireball). However, neither it, nor Hovertank can be called the father of all FPS games. Be that as it may, Catacomb 3D was a simple, but interesting and fun little game. Many consider Wolfenstein 3D to be the first First-Person Shooter game, but Catacomb 3D, a small game produced by ID Software for Softdisk, and a sister game it released later (Called Hovertank), lay claim to this title. The Daemon enemies in this game were the inspiration for the Pink Demons later in Doom.
